What is a franchisee?
Last reviewed July 6, 2026
A franchisee is the independent owner who licenses a franchisor's brand and operating system to run a unit. The franchisee forms their own legal entity, signs the lease, hires the staff, carries the debt, and keeps whatever profit remains after royalties and costs. Ownership of the business is real; ownership of the brand never transfers — it is rented for the term of the agreement.
The role is closer to operator-under-license than to founder: you control execution (hiring, cost discipline, local reputation) while the franchisor controls the system (menu, suppliers, technology, remodels). People who thrive as franchisees tend to want a playbook to run hard, not a canvas. How a franchise works maps who owns what.
