What is a franchise renewal term?

Last reviewed July 6, 2026

Renewal is the right to continue after a franchise agreement's initial term ends — but rarely on your original terms. Most agreements condition renewal on signing the franchisor's then-current contract, often at a higher royalty, paying a renewal fee, and remodeling to current standards. Item 17 of the FDD tables the exact conditions; read them before you model your exit timeline.

"Then-current agreement" is the phrase doing the work: you are not extending your deal, you are re-signing the deal the franchisor offers new buyers that year. Owners near term-end with a remodel bill due face a forced choice — reinvest or sell — so plan the endgame at signing, not in year nine.
